TikTok Provides Users Authority to Limit AI-Generated Content in Their Feeds

Users will soon have a fresh option that allows them to cut down on the volume of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their streams. This move comes as the company announced that it presently contains over 1 billion content made with AI.

Trial and Implementation

This change is undergoing trials over the next few weeks before a global rollout. This shift coincides with a surge in AI content, spurred by recent video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

Recent reports that approximately one in 10 of the fastest-growing channels on another major platform primarily display clips produced artificially. A large amount of this output is deemed “AI slop”, a phrase for substandard, factory-style content that is typically illogical or bizarre.

Based on user feedback that many people appreciate content made with AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to educational videos, and we want to offer the community the option to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own likes,” commented a spokesperson.

Scale of AI Content

The platform shared that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its network labeled as made with AI. In total, in excess of 100 mn media items are submitted to the service every day, making AI-generated material a relatively small percentage of its overall inventory.

How to Adjust Settings

Viewers will be able to limit or boost the volume of AI content they see by opening the “manage topic” setting in the platform and selecting the AI content topic. Other topics that can already be controlled under the tool include politics, style, aesthetics, and choreography.

Platform Guidelines

The platform’s policies mandate users to identify “realistic” AI-generated content, and it forbids dangerous fake videos of celebrities or crisis events. Any believable AI video that is not labeled can be taken down under its terms of service.

In addition, the platform will henceforth add an “AI-made” watermark to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing content made by AI. This action is designed to help prevent users from attempting to bypass the disclosure requirement.

Educational Initiatives

The platform is furthermore establishing a $2 million awareness program for specialists and institutions to create informative material about ethical AI use. This initiative will benefit non-profit groups dedicated to teaching coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has justified its content review process, during discussion over proposals to lay off a large number of review team members in the UK. It is planning to reduce hundreds of positions in its user protection division in the UK capital, with trade unions and internet security professionals raising concerns that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.

A company official clarified that human moderation would still have a role, but AI can safeguard staff by eliminating the most graphic content prior to it is viewed by people. The company stated a notable drop in disturbing and violent content handled by content reviewers over the past year due to the use of its machine learning processes.

We believe it is crucial to balance humans and technology to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we also think it’s highly necessary to limit contact with harmful content as swiftly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is proving valuable process content quickly.”
