Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
