RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he commented. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
